HH2011 Post Event Report Minimize

Thank you for being a part of

Hacker Halted Miami 2011!

Knowledge transfer and exchange has always been a challenge for organizations. Our intent for this conference remains distinctively clear. We hoped to create a platform to facilitate effective knowledge transfer and exchange, where the latest information security threats and landscape evolution are being discussed and debated. And I strongly believe we have achieved that aim.

I think this year’s event was one of the most extraordinary collections of talent, human knowledge, which has ever been gathered at an event.

I take this opportunity to thank all our speakers, sponsors, strategic partners who have in many ways contributed to make this conference possible. More so, I would like to welcome YOU to join us next year as we aim to make it an even better show come 2012!

Jay Bavisi
President

Conference Agenda:

Conference at a Glance:

With over 70 speakers presenting more than 75 topics, Hacker Halted Miami 2011 was definitely a congregation of superstars! Attendees were spoilt for choice as there were many cutting edge presentation topics for them to choose from.

Conference attendees were treated to a talented array of speakers, which featured live hacking and groundbreaking presentations. It was truly a spectacle of superstars effectively wowing a crowd which proved to be highly skilled in their respective fields and equally enthusiastic over what was taking place on stage.

“Hacker Halted was an outstanding conference with an impressive lineup of speakers and excellent networking opportunities. A well run conference with diverse and interesting content”

A standout presentation from Barnaby Jack received the biggest applause from the delegates, as Barnaby demonstrated a live methodology in hacking into an insulin pump – ‘Life threatening vulnerabilities’. Barnaby actually managed to disprove an earlier theory of the insulin pump not susceptible to be hacked from a specified radius. Full story can be found here.

Hacker Halted featured various giveaways such as iPad 2s, kindles, and gift vouchers in a memorable raffle draw which featured on all three days of the conference. Attendees were surprise winners of various memorabilia which served as an added enthusiasm for all to enjoy each and every presentation during the 3 day conference.

The Jester

Hacker Halted had a very unique ‘recipe’ during Jeff Bardin’s keynote session, where the Jester himself had made an appearance and participated in a live discussion. The Jester is known for the repeated denial of service attacks on militant websites, and also his stir on the WikiLeaks website in November last year which forced organization reshuffling of their Internet hosting providers. Full story can be found at here.

“HH 2011 was a great event with a lot of interesting presentation and a big opportunity to meet leading experts and partners in the IT Security field. I'm looking forward to next year event!”

The conference served as a fantastic platform where some new and unknown security vulnerabilities were uncovered and discussed at length. John Strauchs, one of the presenters had worked in Teague Newman’s (fellow presenter) basement in order to develop the said attacks which could take control of prisons’ industrial control systems. The cost of this ‘attack’ was no more than $2,500 and was one of the major talking points of the conference.

The vulnerabilities of SCADA and PLS in correctional facilities uncovered a can of worms which included the questioning of industrial control – often referred to as a supervisory control and also data acquisition, used widely today in modern and highly automated prisons and could be remotely exploited in order to set very compromising situations.

Moreover, researches at Stach & Liu, a security consulting firm which specializes in Google hacking tools revealed the results of their cloud services research at the Hacker Halted conference last month in Miami. The team is now offering one word of advice to companies which are looking into storing critical information on a public cloud: Don’t.

A brief excerpt entails that John Strauchs, a former CIA operations officer appeared last week at Hacker Halted convention in Miami to present their simulated cyber-attack and discuss the pressing prison security issues of the day. These include fears that hackers can break into the electrical systems and overloading them by shutting down closed-circuit teeves, shut down intercoms, break into the cash register in the commissary and enable poor images to help themselves to all the overpriced packaged soups and candy bars; and worst of all, cybering all of the cyber.
